Mental Disorders
Till date, we have not yet been able to accurately find out what the brain is. There are large areas which work but we don’t know exactly what they do. This makes the brain one of the most mysterious organs in the entire human body. There are several mental disorders which are common and are regularly seen in the modern populace affecting a large amount of patients. A few of the more common ones are-
Anxiety disorders- People with anxiety disorders are unable to deal with tensions. They respond to certain conditions and situations with dread and fear. The most common symptom that people feel with this mental condition is anxiety, nervousness, rapid heartbeat, and sweating and raised blood pressure. Anxiety disorders are not caused due to a specific reason but the stress and tension accumulates causing the sudden outpouring of stress. A few examples on anxiety disorders are
Generalized Anxiety Disorder,
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD),
Panic Disorder,
Social Anxiety Disorder
Specific Phobias
Mood disorders- Most mood disorders are difficult to diagnose. The patient is either too sad or too happy but the exact diagnosis is difficult to make without a detailed medical history and a physical examination. Patients who suffer from mood disorders may relapse into severe depression or manic conditions that can result in severe damage to life and limb. The most common disorders are
Depression
Mania
Bipolar disorder
Psychotic disorders- Psychotic disorders are characterized by patients who cannot distinguish reality from fiction. Two of the most common symptoms that psychotic patients demonstrate are hallucinations that are extremely real to the patient and voices that are real to the patient. The hallucinations may be sounds and occurrences that are not real. The voices or delusions are false sounds that the patient believes to be true or real. One very common psychotic disorder is
Schizophrenia
Eating disorders- Eating disorders are a very common occurrence in the modern world. Patients either eat too much or too little and both are not good. Extremes are characteristic in eating disorders with weight and food issues being closely related. A few of the more common eating disorders are-
Anorexia nervosa,
Bulimia nervosa
Binge eating disorder
Impulse control and additions problems- Again these are common conditions found in the modern population. The common symptoms in this condition are a person who are unable to control harmful impulses and urges which can damage property and life. a few of the more common conditions in this mental condition are-
Pyromania in which there is an unhealthy fascination with starting fires
Kleptomania where patients are compelled to steal.
Alcohol and drug additions
Personality disorders- People with personality disorders are unable to interact normally in a social manner with other people. They find it really difficult to make and keep friends because of their behavior patterns. A few examples are-
Antisocial personality disorder,
Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder
Paranoid personality disorder.
These are just a few of the more common medical mental conditions that are found in the populace at any given time. A few more uncommon medical conditions are-
Adjustment disorders- these disorders occur when a person is shaken by a stressful event and develops symptoms in reaction to it. The symptoms may arise after any stressful event either immediately or after six months.
Dissociative disorders- Patients lose contact with their present reality and then continue to live their life in another location without realizing what they are doing.
